[434] In what twenty-five modes is there danger (ādīnava) for the five faculties (indriya)? In what twenty-five modes does one understand the danger of the five faculties?
The manifestation (upaṭṭhāna) of faithlessness (assaddhindriya) is a danger for the faith faculty (saddhindriya); the manifestation of the fever (pariḷāha) of faithlessness is a danger for the faith faculty; in the sense of impermanence there is danger for the faith faculty; in the sense of suffering (dukkha) there is danger for the faith faculty; in the sense of not-self there is danger for the faith faculty.
The manifestation of laziness (kosajja) is a danger for the energy faculty (viriyindriya); the manifestation of the fever of laziness is a danger for the energy faculty; in the sense of impermanence there is danger for the energy faculty; in the sense of suffering and in the sense of not-self there is danger for the energy faculty.
The manifestation of heedlessness (pamāda) is a danger for the mindfulness faculty (satindriya); the manifestation of the fever of heedlessness is a danger for the mindfulness faculty; in the sense of impermanence there is danger for the mindfulness faculty; in the sense of suffering and in the sense of not-self there is danger for the mindfulness faculty.
The manifestation of restlessness (uddhacca) is a danger for the concentration faculty (samādhindriya); the manifestation of the fever of restlessness is a danger for the concentration faculty; in the sense of impermanence there is danger for the concentration faculty; in the sense of suffering and in the sense of not-self there is danger for the concentration faculty.
The manifestation of ignorance (avijjā) is a danger for the wisdom faculty (paññindriya); the manifestation of the fever of ignorance is a danger for the wisdom faculty; in the sense of impermanence there is danger for the wisdom faculty; in the sense of suffering there is danger for the wisdom faculty; in the sense of not-self there is danger for the wisdom faculty.
In these twenty-five modes there is danger for the five faculties; in these twenty-five modes one understands the danger of the five faculties.
