[433] In what twenty-five modes is there gratification (assāda) of the five faculties (indriya)? In what twenty-five modes does one understand the gratification of the five faculties?
The non-appearance of faithlessness is a gratification of the faith faculty (saddhindriya); the non-appearance of the fever (pariḷāha) of faithlessness is a gratification of the faith faculty; confidence (vesārajja) in the conduct of resolution (adhimokkha) is a gratification of the faith faculty; peace and the attainment of an abiding are a gratification of the faith faculty; the pleasure and joy that arise dependent on the faith faculty — this is a gratification of the faith faculty.
The non-appearance of laziness is a gratification of the energy faculty (vīriyindriya); the non-appearance of the fever of laziness is a gratification of the energy faculty; confidence in the conduct of exertion (paggaha) is a gratification of the energy faculty; peace and the attainment of an abiding are a gratification of the energy faculty; the pleasure and joy that arise dependent on the energy faculty — this is a gratification of the energy faculty.
The non-appearance of heedlessness is a gratification of the mindfulness faculty (satindriya); the non-appearance of the fever of heedlessness is a gratification of the mindfulness faculty; confidence in the conduct of establishing (upaṭṭhāna) is a gratification of the mindfulness faculty; peace and the attainment of an abiding are a gratification of the mindfulness faculty; the pleasure and joy that arise dependent on the mindfulness faculty — this is a gratification of the mindfulness faculty.
The non-appearance of restlessness (uddhacca) is a gratification of the concentration faculty (samādhindriya); the non-appearance of the fever of restlessness is a gratification of the concentration faculty; confidence in the conduct of non-distraction is a gratification of the concentration faculty; peace and the attainment of an abiding are a gratification of the concentration faculty; the pleasure and joy that arise dependent on the concentration faculty — this is a gratification of the concentration faculty.
The non-appearance of ignorance (avijjā) is a gratification of the wisdom faculty (paññindriya); the non-appearance of the fever of ignorance is a gratification of the wisdom faculty; confidence in the conduct of seeing (dassana) is a gratification of the wisdom faculty; peace and the attainment of an abiding are a gratification of the wisdom faculty; the pleasure and joy that arise dependent on the wisdom faculty — this is a gratification of the wisdom faculty.
In these twenty-five modes there is gratification of the five faculties; in these twenty-five modes one understands the gratification of the five faculties.
