[432] In what forty ways is there the disappearance (atthaṅgama) of the five faculties (indriya)? In what forty ways does one understand the disappearance of the five faculties? The disappearance of adverting (āvajjanā) for the purpose of resolution (adhimokkha) is the disappearance of the faith faculty (saddhindriya); the disappearance of zeal (chanda) by way of resolution is the disappearance of the faith faculty; the disappearance of attention (manasikāra) by way of resolution is the disappearance of the faith faculty; the non-establishment of singleness (ekatta) by way of the faith faculty is the disappearance of the faith faculty. The disappearance of adverting for the purpose of exertion (paggaha) is the disappearance of the energy faculty (viriyindriya); the disappearance of zeal by way of exertion is the disappearance of the energy faculty; the disappearance of attention by way of exertion is the disappearance of the energy faculty; the non-establishment of singleness by way of the energy faculty is the disappearance of the energy faculty. The disappearance of adverting for the purpose of establishing (upaṭṭhāna) is the disappearance of the mindfulness faculty (satindriya); the disappearance of zeal by way of establishing is the disappearance of the mindfulness faculty; the disappearance of attention by way of establishing is the disappearance of the mindfulness faculty; the non-establishment of singleness by way of the mindfulness faculty is the disappearance of the mindfulness faculty. The disappearance of adverting for the purpose of non-distraction (avikkhepa) is the disappearance of the concentration faculty (samādhindriya); the disappearance of zeal by way of non-distraction is the disappearance of the concentration faculty; the disappearance of attention by way of non-distraction is the disappearance of the concentration faculty; the non-establishment of singleness by way of the concentration faculty is the disappearance of the concentration faculty. The disappearance of adverting for the purpose of seeing (dassana) is the disappearance of the wisdom faculty (paññindriya); the disappearance of zeal by way of seeing is the disappearance of the wisdom faculty; the disappearance of attention by way of seeing is the disappearance of the wisdom faculty; the non-establishment of singleness by way of the wisdom faculty is the disappearance of the wisdom faculty. The disappearance of adverting for the purpose of resolution is the disappearance of the faith faculty; the disappearance of adverting for the purpose of exertion is the disappearance of the energy faculty; the disappearance of adverting for the purpose of establishing is the disappearance of the mindfulness faculty; the disappearance of adverting for the purpose of non-distraction is the disappearance of the concentration faculty; the disappearance of adverting for the purpose of seeing is the disappearance of the wisdom faculty. The disappearance of zeal by way of resolution is the disappearance of the faith faculty; the disappearance of zeal by way of exertion is the disappearance of the energy faculty; the disappearance of zeal by way of establishing is the disappearance of the mindfulness faculty; the disappearance of zeal by way of non-distraction is the disappearance of the concentration faculty; the disappearance of zeal by way of seeing is the disappearance of the wisdom faculty. The disappearance of attention by way of resolution is the disappearance of the faith faculty; the disappearance of attention by way of exertion is the disappearance of the energy faculty; the disappearance of attention by way of establishing is the disappearance of the mindfulness faculty; the disappearance of attention by way of non-distraction is the disappearance of the concentration faculty; the disappearance of attention by way of seeing is the disappearance of the wisdom faculty. The non-establishment of singleness by way of the faith faculty is the disappearance of the faith faculty; the non-establishment of singleness by way of the energy faculty is the disappearance of the energy faculty; the non-establishment of singleness by way of the mindfulness faculty is the disappearance of the mindfulness faculty; the non-establishment of singleness by way of the concentration faculty is the disappearance of the concentration faculty; the non-establishment of singleness by way of the wisdom faculty is the disappearance of the wisdom faculty. In these forty ways there is the disappearance of the five faculties; in these forty ways one understands the disappearance of the five faculties.
