[450] **"Dwelling" (vihāro):** resolving, one dwells by faith (saddhā); exerting, one dwells by energy; establishing, one dwells by mindfulness; effecting non-distraction, one dwells by concentration (samādhi); understanding, one dwells by wisdom (paññā). **"Understood in accordance" (anubuddho):** the meaning of resolution of the faith faculty (saddhindriya) is understood in accordance; the meaning of exertion of the energy faculty (viriyindriya) is understood in accordance; the meaning of establishment of the mindfulness faculty (satindriya) is understood in accordance; the meaning of non-distraction of the concentration faculty (samādhindriya) is understood in accordance; the meaning of seeing of the wisdom faculty (paññindriya) is understood in accordance. **"Penetrated" (paṭividdho):** the meaning of resolution of the faith faculty is penetrated; the meaning of exertion of the energy faculty is penetrated; the meaning of establishment of the mindfulness faculty is penetrated; the meaning of non-distraction of the concentration faculty is penetrated; the meaning of seeing of the wisdom faculty is penetrated. **"As he conducts himself" (yathā carantaṃ):** conducting himself thus by faith, conducting himself thus by energy, conducting himself thus by mindfulness, conducting himself thus by concentration, conducting himself thus by wisdom. **"As he dwells" (yathā viharantaṃ):** dwelling thus by faith, dwelling thus by energy, dwelling thus by mindfulness, dwelling thus by concentration, dwelling thus by wisdom. **"The wise" (viññū):** the wise, the perspicacious, the sagacious, the learned, those endowed with intelligence. **"Fellows in the holy life" (sabrahmacārī):** those who share a single communal act (kamma), a single recitation (uddesa), and an equal training (sikkhā). **"In profound matters" (gambhīresu ṭhānesu):** the profound matters are said to be the meditative absorptions (jhāna), the liberations (vimokkha), concentration, the attainments (samāpatti), the paths, the fruitions, the superknowledges (abhiññā), and the analytic insights (paṭisambhidā). **"They would place confidence" (okappeyyuṃ):** they would believe, they would resolve upon it. **"Surely" (addhā):** this is an expression of certainty, an expression free of doubt, an expression free of perplexity, an expression that is undivided, an expression free of vacillation, an expression of emancipation, an expression that is unerring, an expression that is definitive — thus is "surely." **"Venerable" (āyasmā):** this is a term of affection, a term of respect, a term denoting reverence and deference — thus is "venerable." **"Has attained":** has reached. **"Or will attain":** will reach. *The Introduction (nidāna) is complete.*
