[462] When an ordinary person (puthujjana), developing insight (vipassanā), is skilled in establishment (upaṭṭhāna) — in what nine ways? And skilled in non-establishment — in what nine ways?
He is skilled in establishment as impermanent, skilled in non-establishment as permanent; he is skilled in establishment as suffering (dukkha), skilled in non-establishment as pleasant; he is skilled in establishment as not-self, skilled in non-establishment as self; he is skilled in establishment as destruction, skilled in non-establishment as compact; he is skilled in establishment as fall, skilled in non-establishment as accumulation; he is skilled in establishment as change, skilled in non-establishment as stable; he is skilled in establishment of the signless (animitta), skilled in non-establishment of the sign; he is skilled in establishment of the desireless (appaṇihita), skilled in non-establishment of inclination; he is skilled in establishment of emptiness (suññata), skilled in non-establishment of adherence (abhinivesa). An ordinary person, developing insight, is skilled in establishment in these nine ways and skilled in non-establishment in these nine ways.
When a trainee (sekha), developing insight, is skilled in establishment — in what ten ways? And skilled in non-establishment — in what ten ways?
A trainee, developing insight, is skilled in establishment as impermanent, skilled in non-establishment as permanent … he is skilled in establishment of emptiness, skilled in non-establishment of adherence; he is skilled in establishment of knowledge (ñāṇa), skilled in non-establishment of non-knowledge. A trainee, developing insight, is skilled in establishment in these ten ways and skilled in non-establishment in these ten ways.
When one free from lust (vītarāga), developing insight, is skilled in establishment — in what twelve ways? And skilled in non-establishment — in what twelve ways?
He is skilled in establishment as impermanent, skilled in non-establishment as permanent … he is skilled in establishment of knowledge, skilled in non-establishment of non-knowledge; he is skilled in establishment of disjunction, skilled in non-establishment of conjunction; he is skilled in establishment of cessation (nirodha), skilled in non-establishment of volitional formations (saṅkhārā). One free from lust, developing insight, is skilled in establishment in these twelve ways and skilled in non-establishment in these twelve ways.
Because of having adverted [to the object], through skill in the establishment of the object he combines the faculties, understands their domain, and penetrates their meaning of calm (samattha) … he combines the dhammas, understands their domain, and penetrates their meaning of calm.
