[463] "He brings the faculties (indriya) together": how does he bring the faculties together?
He brings together the faith faculty (saddhindriya) in the sense of resolution (adhimokkha) … He brings the faculties together through skill in establishing the sign of serenity (samathanimitta), through skill in establishing the sign of exertion (paggahanimitta), through skill in establishing non-distraction, through skill in establishing gladdening (sampahaṃsana), through skill in establishing equanimity, through skill in establishing oneness (ekatta), through skill in establishing knowledge (ñāṇa), through skill in establishing the mind (citta); through skill in establishing [things] as impermanent, through skill in not establishing [them] as permanent; through skill in establishing [them] as suffering (dukkha), through skill in not establishing [them] as pleasant; through skill in establishing [them] as not-self, through skill in not establishing [them] as self; through skill in establishing [them] as subject to destruction (khaya), through skill in not establishing [them] as compact (ghana); through skill in establishing [them] as subject to fall (vaya), through skill in not establishing accumulation (āyūhana); through skill in establishing change (vipariṇāma), through skill in not establishing [them] as stable (dhuva); through skill in establishing the signless (animitta), through skill in not establishing the sign (nimitta); through skill in establishing the wishless (appaṇihita), through skill in not establishing wish (paṇidhāna); through skill in establishing emptiness (suññatā), through skill in not establishing adherence (abhinivesa); through skill in establishing knowledge, through skill in not establishing non-knowledge; through skill in establishing disjunction (visaññoga), through skill in not establishing conjunction (saññoga); through skill in establishing cessation (nirodha) — thus he brings the faculties together; and he knows the resort (gocara), and he penetrates that which has peace as its meaning.
