[483] What is liberation through jhāna (jhānavimokkha)? "Renunciation (nekkhamma) is born (jāyati)"—thus it is jhāna; "it burns up (jhāpeti) sensual desire (kāmacchanda)"—thus it is jhāna. "Being born, one is released"—thus it is liberation through jhāna; "burning up, one is released"—thus it is liberation through jhāna. "They are born"—thus they are dhammas; "it burns up"—thus they are defilements (kilesa); one knows both those that are born and those that are burned up—thus it is liberation through jhāna.
"Non-ill-will is born"—thus it is jhāna; "it burns up ill will (byāpāda)"—thus it is jhāna. "Being born, one is released"—thus it is liberation through jhāna; "burning up, one is released"—thus it is liberation through jhāna.
