Suttapiṭaka · Khuddakanikāya · Paṭisambhidāmagga · Vol. 31 · Section 482

[482] What is the liberation that may be cool (sītisiyāvimokkha)? It may be that one liberation that may be cool becomes ten liberations that may be cool, and ten liberations that may be cool become one liberation that may be cool — by way of the basis (vatthu), as a mode of exposition (pariyāya). "It may be": and how may it be? Contemplation of impermanence (aniccānupassanā) is knowledge (ñāṇa) of the unsurpassed state of coolness; since it is freed from the torment, fever, and distress [arising] from [taking things] as permanent, it is a liberation that may be cool. Contemplation of suffering (dukkhānupassanā) is knowledge of the unsurpassed state of coolness; since it is freed from the torment, fever, and distress [arising] from [taking things] as pleasant, it is a liberation that may be cool. Contemplation of not-self (anattānupassanā) is knowledge of the unsurpassed state of coolness; since it is freed from the torment, fever, and distress [arising] from [taking things] as self, it is a liberation that may be cool. Contemplation of disenchantment (nibbidānupassanā) is knowledge of the unsurpassed state of coolness; since it is freed from the torment, fever, and distress [arising] from delight, it is a liberation that may be cool. Contemplation of dispassion (virāgānupassanā) is knowledge of the unsurpassed state of coolness; since it is freed from the torment, fever, and distress [arising] from lust, it is a liberation that may be cool. Contemplation of cessation (nirodhānupassanā) is knowledge of the unsurpassed state of coolness; since it is freed from the torment, fever, and distress [arising] from origin, it is a liberation that may be cool. Contemplation of relinquishment (paṭinissaggānupassanā) is knowledge of the unsurpassed state of coolness; since it is freed from the torment, fever, and distress [arising] from grasping, it is a liberation that may be cool. Contemplation of the signless (animittānupassanā) is knowledge of the unsurpassed state of coolness; since it is freed from the torment, fever, and distress [arising] from signs (nimitta), it is a liberation that may be cool. Contemplation of the wishless (appaṇihitānupassanā) is knowledge of the unsurpassed state of coolness; since it is freed from the torment, fever, and distress [arising] from wishing, it is a liberation that may be cool. Contemplation of emptiness (suññatānupassanā) is knowledge of the unsurpassed state of coolness; since it is freed from the torment, fever, and distress [arising] from adherence, it is a liberation that may be cool. Thus it may be that one liberation that may be cool becomes ten liberations that may be cool, and ten liberations that may be cool become one liberation that may be cool — by way of the basis, as a mode of exposition. Contemplation of impermanence in form (rūpa) is knowledge of the unsurpassed state of coolness; since it is freed from the torment, fever, and distress [arising] from [taking it] as permanent, it is a liberation that may be cool … by way of the basis, as a mode of exposition. In feeling (vedanā) … in perception, in volitional formations, in consciousness, in the eye … in aging-and-death, contemplation of impermanence is knowledge of the unsurpassed state of coolness; since it is freed from the torment, fever, and distress [arising] from [taking it] as permanent, it is a liberation that may be cool … Thus it may be that one liberation that may be cool becomes ten liberations that may be cool, and ten liberations that may be cool become one liberation that may be cool — by way of the basis, as a mode of exposition. This is the liberation that may be cool.
