[505] In how many ways is there penetration of the truths? In how many ways does one penetrate the truths? In four ways there is penetration of the truths; in four ways one penetrates the truths: one penetrates the truth of suffering (dukkha) as penetration (paṭivedha) by full understanding (pariññā); one penetrates the truth of origin as penetration by abandonment (pahāna); one penetrates the truth of cessation as penetration by realization (sacchikiriyā); one penetrates the truth of the path as penetration by development (bhāvanā). In these four ways there is penetration of the truths. Penetrating the truths in these four ways, one is liberated by faith (saddhādhimutta) by way of the signless liberation (animitta-vimokkha), a body-witness (kāyasakkhī) by way of the desireless liberation (appaṇihita-vimokkha), one attained to view (diṭṭhippatta) by way of the void liberation (suññata-vimokkha).

In nine ways there is penetration of the truths; in nine ways one penetrates the truths: one penetrates the truth of suffering as penetration by full understanding … and the penetration by realization of cessation. In these nine ways there is penetration of the truths. Penetrating the truths in these nine ways, one is liberated by faith by way of the signless liberation, a body-witness by way of the desireless liberation, one attained to view by way of the void liberation.
