[522] In the case of an excellent destination (gati-sampatti), when [rebirth-linking is] dissociated from knowledge (ñāṇa), through the conditionality of which six causes (hetu) does rebirth occur?
At the moment of impulsion (javana) of wholesome kamma, two wholesome causes are connascence conditions (sahajāta-paccaya) for the volition (cetanā) arisen at that moment; therefore it is said: "With wholesome roots as condition, too, there are volitional formations." At the moment of delight (nikanti), two unwholesome causes are connascence conditions for the volition arisen at that moment; therefore it is said: "With unwholesome roots as condition, too, there are volitional formations." At the moment of rebirth-linking (paṭisandhi), two indeterminate (abyākata) causes are connascence conditions for the volition arisen at that moment; therefore it is said: "With name-and-form as condition, too, there is consciousness; with consciousness as condition, too, there is name-and-form."
At the moment of rebirth-linking, the five aggregates are connascence conditions, are mutuality conditions (aññamañña-paccaya), are dependence conditions (nissaya-paccaya), are dissociation conditions (vippayutta-paccaya). At the moment of rebirth-linking, the four great primary elements (mahābhūta) are connascence conditions, are mutuality conditions, are dependence conditions. At the moment of rebirth-linking, the three life-formations (jīvitasaṅkhāra) are connascence conditions, are mutuality conditions, are dependence conditions, are dissociation conditions. At the moment of rebirth-linking, name and form (rūpa) are connascence conditions, are mutuality conditions, are dependence conditions, are dissociation conditions. At the moment of rebirth-linking, these fourteen dhammas are connascence conditions, are mutuality conditions, are dependence conditions, are dissociation conditions. At the moment of rebirth-linking, the four immaterial aggregates are connascence conditions, are mutuality conditions, are dependence conditions, are association conditions (sampayutta-paccaya). At the moment of rebirth-linking, the four faculties (indriya) are connascence conditions, are mutuality conditions, are dependence conditions, are association conditions. At the moment of rebirth-linking, the two causes are connascence conditions, are mutuality conditions, are dependence conditions, are association conditions. At the moment of rebirth-linking, name and consciousness (viññāṇa) are connascence conditions, are mutuality conditions, are dependence conditions, are association conditions. At the moment of rebirth-linking, these twelve dhammas are connascence conditions, are mutuality conditions, are dependence conditions, are association conditions. At the moment of rebirth-linking, these twenty-six dhammas are connascence conditions, are mutuality conditions, are dependence conditions, are dissociation conditions.
In the case of an excellent destination, when [rebirth-linking is] dissociated from knowledge, rebirth occurs through the conditionality of these six causes.
For affluent khattiyas, affluent brahmins, affluent householders, and devas of the sense sphere, when [rebirth-linking is] dissociated from knowledge, through the conditionality of which six causes does rebirth occur? At the moment of impulsion of wholesome kamma, two wholesome causes are connascence conditions for the volition arisen at that moment; therefore it is said: "With wholesome roots as condition, too, there are volitional formations." … For affluent khattiyas, affluent brahmins, affluent householders, and devas of the sense sphere, when [rebirth-linking is] dissociated from knowledge, rebirth occurs through the conditionality of these six causes.
The Discourse on Destinations (Gatikathā) is concluded.
