[561] They are factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga) because they awaken to serenity's (samatha) meaning of non-distraction; they are factors of awakening because they awaken to insight's (vipassanā) meaning of contemplation; they are factors of awakening because they awaken to serenity and insight's meaning of single taste (ekarasa); they are factors of awakening because they awaken to the coupled pair's (yuganaddha) meaning of not exceeding one another; they are factors of awakening because they awaken to the training's meaning of undertaking; they are factors of awakening because they awaken to the object's meaning of resort; they are factors of awakening because they awaken to the meaning of exerting the sluggish mind (citta); they are factors of awakening because they awaken to the meaning of restraining the restless mind; they are factors of awakening because they awaken to the meaning of looking on with equanimity at what is purified in both respects; they are factors of awakening because they awaken to the meaning of the attainment of distinction; they are factors of awakening because they awaken to the meaning of penetration to what is higher; they are factors of awakening because they awaken to the meaning of the breakthrough to truth; they are factors of awakening because they awaken to the meaning of causing establishment in cessation (nirodha).
