[569] There the Venerable Sāriputta addressed the bhikkhus: "Friends!" "Friend," those bhikkhus replied to the Venerable Sāriputta. The Venerable Sāriputta said this: "Friends, there are these seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga). Which seven? The awakening factor of mindfulness (satisambojjhaṅga), the awakening factor of investigation of dhammas (dhammavicayasambojjhaṅga) … the awakening factor of equanimity (upekkhāsambojjhaṅga). These, friends, are the seven factors of awakening. Among these seven factors of awakening, friends, in whichever factor of awakening I wish to dwell in the morning, in that very factor of awakening I dwell in the morning; in whichever factor of awakening I wish to dwell at midday … in the evening, in that very factor of awakening I dwell in the evening.
"If, friends, [the thought] 'the awakening factor of mindfulness' occurs to me, [the thought] 'it is measureless' occurs to me, [the thought] 'it is well aroused' occurs to me; as I go about, I understand it, while it persists: 'it persists'; and if it falls away in me, I understand: 'it falls away in me owing to this condition.' The awakening factor of investigation of dhammas … If, friends, [the thought] 'the awakening factor of equanimity' occurs to me, [the thought] 'it is measureless' occurs to me, [the thought] 'it is well aroused' occurs to me; as I go about, I understand it, while it persists: 'it persists'; and if it falls away in me, I understand: 'it falls away in me owing to this condition.'
"Suppose, friends, a king or a king's chief minister had a clothes-chest full of variously dyed cloths. Whatever pair of garments he might wish to put on in the morning, that very pair of garments he would put on in the morning; whatever pair of garments he might wish to put on at midday, in the evening, that very pair of garments he would put on in the evening. Even so, friends, among these seven factors of awakening, in whichever factor of awakening I wish to dwell in the morning, in that very factor of awakening I dwell in the morning; in whichever factor of awakening I wish to dwell at midday, in the evening, in that very factor of awakening I dwell in the evening. If, friends, [the thought] 'the awakening factor of mindfulness' occurs to me, [the thought] 'it is measureless' occurs to me, [the thought] 'it is well aroused' occurs to me; as I go about, I understand it, while it persists: 'it persists'; and if it falls away in me, I understand: 'it falls away in me owing to this condition.' … If, friends, [the thought] 'the awakening factor of equanimity' occurs to me, [the thought] 'it is measureless' occurs to me, [the thought] 'it is well aroused' occurs to me; as I go about, I understand it, while it persists: 'it persists'; and if it falls away in me, I understand: 'it falls away in me owing to this condition.'"
