Suttapiṭaka · Khuddakanikāya · Paṭisambhidāmagga · Vol. 31 · Section 573

[573] By what eight modes does the equanimity (upekkhā) factor of awakening (bojjhaṅga) stand? Through having adverted to non-arising, the equanimity factor of awakening stands; through not having adverted to arising — ["they awaken to the meaning of the mind's (citta) resolute application, thus they are factors of awakening; they awaken to the meaning of the mind's leading out, thus they are factors of awakening; (they awaken) to the meaning of the mind's escape"] — the equanimity factor of awakening stands. Through having adverted to non-occurrence, the equanimity factor of awakening stands; through not having adverted to occurrence, the equanimity factor of awakening stands. Through having adverted to the signless, the equanimity factor of awakening stands; through not having adverted to the sign, the equanimity factor of awakening stands. Through having adverted to cessation (nirodha), the equanimity factor of awakening stands; through not having adverted to formations (saṅkhārā), the equanimity factor of awakening stands. By these eight modes the equanimity factor of awakening stands. By what eight modes does the equanimity factor of awakening fall away? Through having adverted to arising, the equanimity factor of awakening falls away; through not having adverted to non-arising, the equanimity factor of awakening falls away. Through having adverted to occurrence, the equanimity factor of awakening falls away; through not having adverted to non-occurrence, the equanimity factor of awakening falls away. Through having adverted to the sign, the equanimity factor of awakening falls away; through not having adverted to the signless, the equanimity factor of awakening falls away. Through having adverted to formations, the equanimity factor of awakening falls away; through not having adverted to cessation, the equanimity factor of awakening falls away. By these eight modes the equanimity factor of awakening falls away. Thus, while walking, I understand it as it stands: "It stands"; and if it falls away, I understand: "It falls away for me owing to this condition." The Discussion of the Factors of Awakening (Bojjhaṅgakathā) is concluded. ___________ The Discussion of Loving-Kindness (Mettākathā) in the Yuganaddha Chapter Setting at Sāvatthī.
