[576] In what ten ways is the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness (mettā cetovimutti) pervading the directions? "May all beings in the eastern direction be free from enmity, free from affliction, free from distress; may they maintain themselves in happiness. May all beings in the western direction … may all beings in the northern direction, all beings in the southern direction, all beings in the eastern intermediate direction, all beings in the western intermediate direction, all beings in the northern intermediate direction, all beings in the southern intermediate direction, all beings in the direction below, all beings in the direction above be free from enmity, free from affliction, free from distress; may they maintain themselves in happiness. May all breathing things (pāṇā) in the eastern direction … creatures (bhūtā), persons (puggalā), those included within individual existence (attabhāvapariyāpannā), all women, all men, all noble ones, all who are not noble, all devas, all human beings, all beings fallen into states of woe (vinipātikā), be free from enmity, free from affliction, free from distress; may they maintain themselves in happiness. May all beings fallen into states of woe in the western direction … all beings fallen into states of woe in the northern direction, all beings fallen into states of woe in the southern direction, all beings fallen into states of woe in the eastern intermediate direction, all beings fallen into states of woe in the western intermediate direction, all beings fallen into states of woe in the northern intermediate direction, all beings fallen into states of woe in the southern intermediate direction, all beings fallen into states of woe in the direction below, all beings fallen into states of woe in the direction above be free from enmity, free from affliction, free from distress; may they maintain themselves in happiness." In these ten ways the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness pervades the directions. "Avoiding the oppressing of all beings, by non-oppression; avoiding injuring, by non-injuring; avoiding tormenting, by non-tormenting; avoiding exhausting, by non-exhausting; avoiding harassing, by non-harassing: may all beings be free from enmity, may they not be hostile; may they be happy, may they not suffer; may they be happy in themselves, may they not be miserable in themselves" — in these eight ways one loves (mettāyati) all beings; therefore it is loving-kindness (mettā). One intends (cetayati) that state; therefore it is mind (ceto). It is released from all obsessions of ill will (byāpāda); therefore it is deliverance (vimutti). It is both loving-kindness and deliverance of mind: hence "deliverance of mind through loving-kindness."
