[577] One resolves with faith (saddhā): "May all beings be free from enmity, may they be secure, may they be happy" — thus the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness (mettā cetovimutti) is imbued with the faculty of faith (saddhindriya). One exerts energy: "May all beings be free from enmity, may they be secure, may they be happy" — thus the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is imbued with the faculty of energy (vīriyindriya). One establishes mindfulness: "May all beings be free from enmity, may they be secure, may they be happy" — thus the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is imbued with the faculty of mindfulness (satindriya). One concentrates the mind (citta): "May all beings be free from enmity, may they be secure, may they be happy" — thus the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is imbued with the faculty of concentration (samādhindriya). One understands with wisdom (paññā): "May all beings be free from enmity, may they be secure, may they be happy" — thus the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is imbued with the faculty of wisdom (paññindriya).
These five faculties (indriya) are the repeated practice (āsevanā) of the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness: by these five faculties the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is repeatedly practiced. These five faculties are the development (bhāvanā) of the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness: by these five faculties the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is developed. These five faculties are the frequent cultivation (bahulīkamma) of the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness: by these five faculties the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is frequently cultivated. These five faculties are the adornment (alaṅkāra) of the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness: by these five faculties the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is well adorned. These five faculties are the equipment (parikkhāra) of the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness: by these five faculties the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is well equipped. These five faculties are the retinue (parivāra) of the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness: by these five faculties the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is well attended.
These five faculties are the repeated practice, the development, the frequent cultivation, the adornment, the equipment, the retinue, and the fulfillment of the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness; they accompany it, are co-arisen with it, are combined with it, and are conjoined with it; they are its entering into, its gaining of serene confidence, its steadying, its liberating, and its seeing that "this is peaceful"; they are made a vehicle, made a foundation, carried out, consolidated, well undertaken, well developed, well resolved upon, fully arisen, and well liberated; they generate it, make it shine, and make it blaze forth.
