[578] "May all beings be free from enmity; may they be secure; may they be happy"—thus one does not waver in faithlessness: the liberation of mind by loving-kindness (mettā cetovimutti) is fortified by the power of faith (saddhābala). "May all beings be free from enmity; may they be secure; may they be happy"—thus one does not waver in indolence: the liberation of mind by loving-kindness is fortified by the power of energy (vīriyabala). "May all beings be free from enmity; may they be secure; may they be happy"—thus one does not waver in heedlessness: the liberation of mind by loving-kindness is fortified by the power of mindfulness (satibala). "May all beings be free from enmity; may they be secure; may they be happy"—thus one does not waver in restlessness: the liberation of mind by loving-kindness is fortified by the power of concentration (samādhibala). "May all beings be free from enmity; may they be secure; may they be happy"—thus one does not waver in ignorance: the liberation of mind by loving-kindness is fortified by the power of wisdom (paññābala).
These five powers are the repeated practice (āsevanā) of the liberation of mind by loving-kindness: by these five powers the liberation of mind by loving-kindness is repeatedly practised. These five powers are the development (bhāvanā) of the liberation of mind by loving-kindness: by these five powers the liberation of mind by loving-kindness is developed. These five powers are the making much of the liberation of mind by loving-kindness: by these five powers the liberation of mind by loving-kindness is made much of. These five powers are the adornment of the liberation of mind by loving-kindness: by these five powers the liberation of mind by loving-kindness is well adorned. These five powers are the equipment (parikkhāra) of the liberation of mind by loving-kindness: by these five powers the liberation of mind by loving-kindness is well equipped. These five powers are the retinue of the liberation of mind by loving-kindness: by these five powers the liberation of mind by loving-kindness is well attended.
These five powers are the repeated practice, the development, the making much of, the adornment, the equipment, the retinue, and the fulfilment of the liberation of mind by loving-kindness; they accompany it, arise together with it, are conjoined with it, are associated with it; they are its launching forth, its gaining of confidence, its becoming steady, its being released, its seeing that "this is peaceful"; they are made a vehicle, made a basis, attended to, consolidated, well undertaken, well developed, well resolved upon, well arisen, well liberated; they bring it to birth, make it shine, make it blaze.
