[579] He establishes mindfulness thus: "May all beings be free from enmity, may they be secure, may they be happy" — the deliverance of mind (cetovimutti) through loving-kindness is developed by the awakening factor of mindfulness. "May all beings…" — he investigates with wisdom¹ — the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is developed by the awakening factor of investigation of dhammas. "May all beings…" — he exerts energy — the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is developed by the awakening factor of energy. "May all beings…" — he calms fever (pariḷāha) — the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is developed by the awakening factor of rapture. "May all beings…" — he calms grossness (duṭṭhulla) — the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is developed by the awakening factor of tranquility. He concentrates the mind (citta) thus: "May all beings be free from enmity, may they be secure, may they be happy" — the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is developed by the awakening factor of concentration (samādhi). He looks on at the defilements with knowledge (ñāṇa) thus: "May all beings be free from enmity, may they be secure, may they be happy" — the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is developed by the awakening factor of equanimity.
These seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga) are the repeated practice (āsevanā) of the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness; by these seven factors of awakening the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is repeatedly practised. These seven factors of awakening are the development of the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness; by these seven factors of awakening the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is developed. These seven factors of awakening are the making much of the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness; by these seven factors of awakening the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is made much of. These seven factors of awakening are the adornment of the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness; by these seven factors of awakening the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is well adorned. These seven factors of awakening are the requisites of the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness; by these seven factors of awakening the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is well furnished. These seven factors of awakening are the retinue of the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness; by these seven factors of awakening the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is well attended.
These seven factors of awakening are, for the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness, its repeated practice, its development, its making much of, its adornment, its requisites, its retinue, its fulfilment; they accompany it, arise together with it, are conjoined with it, are associated with it; they are its springing forward, its gladdening confidence, its steadying, its releasing; they are the seeing of it as "this is peaceful"; they are made a vehicle, made a foundation, carried out, consolidated, well undertaken, well developed, well resolved upon, well arisen, well liberated; they generate it, make it shine, make it blaze forth.
