[584] "May all beings in states of loss (vinipātikā) in the upper direction be free from enmity, be secure, be happy" — thus one resolves with faith; the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness (mettā cetovimutti) is developed by the faith faculty (saddhindriya). "May all beings in states of loss in the upper direction be free from enmity, be secure, be happy" — thus one exerts energy; the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is developed by the energy faculty (vīriyindriya) … One establishes mindfulness; the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is developed by the mindfulness faculty (satindriya) … One concentrates the mind (citta); the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is developed by the concentration faculty (samādhindriya) … One understands with wisdom; the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is developed by the wisdom faculty (paññindriya). These five faculties are the cultivation (āsevanā) of the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness; by these five faculties the deliverance of mind through loving-kindness is cultivated … they generate it, illuminate it, make it blaze forth.
