[585] "May all beings fallen to states of loss (vinipātikā) in the upper direction be free from enmity; may they be secure; may they be happy" — thus one does not waver in faithlessness: the liberation of mind (cetovimutti) by loving-kindness is fortified by the power (bala) of faith. … One does not waver in laziness: the liberation of mind by loving-kindness is fortified by the power of energy. … One does not waver in heedlessness: the liberation of mind by loving-kindness is fortified by the power of mindfulness. … One does not waver in restlessness: the liberation of mind by loving-kindness is fortified by the power of concentration (samādhi). … One does not waver in ignorance (avijjā): the liberation of mind by loving-kindness is fortified by the power of wisdom. These five powers are the cultivation (āsevanā) of the liberation of mind by loving-kindness; by these five powers the liberation of mind by loving-kindness is cultivated. … They bring it into being, make it shine, make it blaze.
