Suttapiṭaka · Khuddakanikāya · Paṭisambhidāmagga · Vol. 31 · Section 586

[586] He establishes mindfulness thus: "May all beings fallen to states of loss (vinipātikā) in the upper direction be free from enmity; may they be secure; may they be happy" — the mind-deliverance of loving-kindness (mettā cetovimutti) is fully developed by the awakening factor of mindfulness (satisambojjhaṅga) … He investigates with wisdom — the mind-deliverance of loving-kindness is fully developed by the awakening factor of investigation of dhammas … He exerts energy — the mind-deliverance of loving-kindness is fully developed by the awakening factor of energy … He calms the fever (pariḷāha) — the mind-deliverance of loving-kindness is fully developed by the awakening factor of rapture … He calms grossness (duṭṭhulla) — the mind-deliverance of loving-kindness is fully developed by the awakening factor of tranquility … He concentrates the mind — the mind-deliverance of loving-kindness is fully developed by the awakening factor of concentration (samādhi) … With knowledge (ñāṇa) he closely regards the defilements (kilesa) — the mind-deliverance of loving-kindness is fully developed by the awakening factor of equanimity. These seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga) are the repeated practice (āsevanā) of the mind-deliverance of loving-kindness; by these seven factors of awakening the mind-deliverance of loving-kindness is repeatedly practiced … they generate it, make it shine, make it blaze.
