[587] He sees rightly thus: "May all beings fallen into perdition (vinipātikā) in the upper direction be free from enmity; may they be secure; may they be happy" — thus the liberation of mind by loving-kindness (mettā cetovimutti) is fully developed by right view (sammādiṭṭhi). … He rightly directs [his thought upon it]: the liberation of mind by loving-kindness is fully developed by right thought (sammāsaṅkappa). … He rightly embraces [it]: the liberation of mind by loving-kindness is fully developed by right speech (sammāvācā). … He rightly originates [action]: the liberation of mind by loving-kindness is fully developed by right action (sammākammanta). … He rightly cleanses [it]: the liberation of mind by loving-kindness is fully developed by right livelihood (sammā-ājīva). … He rightly exerts [himself]: the liberation of mind by loving-kindness is fully developed by right effort (sammāvāyāma). … He rightly establishes [mindfulness]: the liberation of mind by loving-kindness is fully developed by right mindfulness (sammāsati). … He rightly concentrates: the liberation of mind by loving-kindness is fully developed by right concentration (sammāsamādhi).
These eight path factors (maggaṅga) are the frequenting of the liberation of mind by loving-kindness; by these eight path factors the liberation of mind by loving-kindness is frequented. … These eight path factors are the retinue¹ of the liberation of mind by loving-kindness; by these eight path factors the liberation of mind by loving-kindness is well surrounded. These eight path factors are the frequenting of the liberation of mind by loving-kindness; they are its development; they are its repeated practice; they are its adornment; they are its requisite; they are its retinue; they are its fulfilment; they are accompanying it; they are conascent with it; they are conjoined with it; they are associated with it; they are its launching forth; they are its gaining of confidence; they are its steadying; they are its releasing; they are the seeing of it thus: "This is peaceful"; they are made a vehicle; they are made a ground; they are attended to; they are consolidated; they are well undertaken; they are well developed; they are well resolved upon; they are well raised up; they are well liberated; they generate [it], they make [it] shine, they make [it] radiant.
