[640] What is emptiness through suppression (vikkhambhanasuñña)? Through renunciation (nekkhamma), sensual desire (kāmacchanda) is both suppressed and empty. Through non-ill will (abyāpāda), ill will (byāpāda) is both suppressed and empty. Through the perception of light (ālokasaññā), dullness and drowsiness (thīnamiddha) are both suppressed and empty. Through non-distraction (avikkhepa), restlessness (uddhacca) is both suppressed and empty. Through the defining of dhammas (dhammavavatthāna), doubt (vicikicchā) is both suppressed and empty. Through knowledge (ñāṇa), ignorance (avijjā) is both suppressed and empty. Through gladness (pāmujja), discontent (arati) is both suppressed and empty. Through the first jhāna, the hindrances (nīvaraṇa) are both suppressed and empty. … Through the path of arahantship (arahattamagga), all defilements (kilesa) are both suppressed and empty. This is emptiness through suppression.
