Through renunciation (nekkhamma), sensual desire (kāmacchanda) is void by substitution; through non-ill will (abyāpāda), ill will (byāpāda) is void by substitution; through the perception of light (ālokasaññā), dullness and drowsiness (thīnamiddha) are void by substitution; through non-distraction (avikkhepa), restlessness (uddhacca) is void by substitution; through the defining of dhammas (dhammavavatthāna), doubt (vicikicchā) is void by substitution; through knowledge (ñāṇa), ignorance (avijjā) is void by substitution; through gladness (pāmujja), discontent (arati) is void by substitution; through the first jhāna, the hindrances (nīvaraṇa) are void by substitution … through the contemplation of turning away (vivaṭṭanānupassanā), adherence due to bondage (saññogābhinivesa) is void by substitution.
