[642] What is emptiness through cutting off (samucchedasuñña)? Through renunciation (nekkhamma), sensual desire is both cut off and empty; through non-ill will (abyāpāda), ill will is both cut off and empty; through the perception of light (ālokasaññā), dullness and drowsiness are both cut off and empty; through non-distraction (avikkhepa), restlessness is both cut off and empty; through the defining of dhammas (dhammavavatthāna), doubt is both cut off and empty; through knowledge (ñāṇa), ignorance is both cut off and empty; through gladness (pāmujja), discontent (arati) is both cut off and empty; through the first jhāna, the hindrances (nīvaraṇa) are both cut off and empty; … through the path of arahantship (arahattamagga), all defilements (kilesa) are both cut off and empty. This is emptiness through cutting off.
