[658] What is the exhaustion of occurrence on the part of one who is clearly comprehending (sampajāna), which is the emptiness in the ultimate sense (paramaṭṭha) among all emptinesses? One who is clearly comprehending exhausts the occurrence of sensual desire (kāmacchanda) by renunciation (nekkhamma); exhausts the occurrence of ill will (byāpāda) by non-ill will; exhausts the occurrence of dullness and drowsiness (thīna-middha) by the perception of light; exhausts the occurrence of restlessness (uddhacca) by non-distraction; exhausts the occurrence of doubt (vicikicchā) by the defining of dhammas; exhausts the occurrence of ignorance (avijjā) by knowledge (ñāṇa); exhausts the occurrence of discontent by gladness; exhausts the occurrence of the hindrances (nīvaraṇa) by the first jhāna; … exhausts the occurrence of all defilements by the path (magga) of Arahantship.
Or again, for one who is clearly comprehending, attaining final Nibbāna by the Nibbāna-element without residue remaining, this very occurrence of the eye is exhausted and no other occurrence of the eye arises; this very occurrence of the ear …; the occurrence of the nose, the occurrence of the tongue, the occurrence of the body, the occurrence of the mind is exhausted and no other occurrence of the mind arises. This is the exhaustion of occurrence on the part of one who is clearly comprehending, which is the emptiness in the ultimate sense among all emptinesses.
