[670] What is wisdom broad as the earth (bhūripaññā), in the phrase "they lead to the state of having wisdom broad as the earth"?
It overcomes lust (rāga), thus it is wisdom broad as the earth; it has overcome it, thus it is wisdom broad as the earth. It overcomes hatred (dosa), thus it is wisdom broad as the earth; it has overcome it, thus it is wisdom broad as the earth. It overcomes delusion (moha), thus it is wisdom broad as the earth; it has overcome it, thus it is wisdom broad as the earth. It overcomes anger (kodha) … resentment (upanāha), denigration (makkha), domineering (paḷāsa), envy (issā), meanness (macchariya), deceit (māyā), hypocrisy (sāṭheyya), obstinacy (thambha), presumption (sārambha), conceit (māna), excessive conceit (atimāna), vanity (mada), heedlessness (pamāda), all defilements (kilesa), all kinds of misconduct (duccarita), all volitional formations (abhisaṅkhāra) … all kamma leading to existence (bhavagāmikamma), thus it is wisdom broad as the earth; it has overcome them, thus it is wisdom broad as the earth.
Lust is an enemy: it is the wisdom that crushes that enemy, thus it is wisdom broad as the earth. Hatred is an enemy: it is the wisdom that crushes that enemy, thus it is wisdom broad as the earth. Delusion is an enemy: it is the wisdom that crushes that enemy, thus it is wisdom broad as the earth. Anger … resentment, denigration, domineering, envy, meanness, deceit, hypocrisy, obstinacy, presumption, conceit, excessive conceit, vanity, heedlessness, all defilements, all kinds of misconduct, all volitional formations … all kamma leading to existence are enemies: it is the wisdom that crushes those enemies, thus it is wisdom broad as the earth.
"Bhūri" is a term for the earth: one is endowed with wisdom equal to that earth, extensive and abundant, thus it is wisdom broad as the earth. Moreover, this is a designation for wisdom: "broad (bhūri)," "sagacity (medhā)," "guide (pariṇāyikā)"—thus it is wisdom broad as the earth.
