[683] What are the eight steps of spiritual power (iddhi)?
If a bhikkhu, depending on zeal (chanda), obtains concentration (samādhi), obtains one-pointedness of mind (citta), then zeal is not concentration, concentration is not zeal; zeal is one thing, concentration is another. If a bhikkhu, depending on energy, obtains concentration, obtains one-pointedness of mind, then energy is not concentration, concentration is not energy; energy is one thing, concentration is another. If a bhikkhu, depending on mind, obtains concentration, obtains one-pointedness of mind, then mind is not concentration, concentration is not mind; mind is one thing, concentration is another. If a bhikkhu, depending on investigation (vīmaṃsā), obtains concentration, obtains one-pointedness of mind, then investigation is not concentration, concentration is not investigation; investigation is one thing, concentration is another.
These eight steps of spiritual power conduce to the gaining of spiritual power, to the acquisition of spiritual power, to the transformation of spiritual power, to versatility in spiritual power, to mastery of spiritual power, and to intrepidity in spiritual power.
