[682] What are the four bases of success (iddhi)? Here a bhikkhu develops the basis for success (iddhipāda) endowed with concentration (samādhi) due to zeal (chanda) and the volitional formations of exertion (padhānasaṅkhāra); he develops the basis for success endowed with concentration due to energy and the volitional formations of exertion; he develops the basis for success endowed with concentration due to mind (citta) and the volitional formations of exertion; he develops the basis for success endowed with concentration due to investigation (vīmaṃsā) and the volitional formations of exertion. These are the four bases of success; they lead to the gaining of success, to the obtaining of success, to the transformation of success,¹ to the diversification of success, to mastery over success, and to intrepidity in success. ¹ [Variant note in the Siam Raṭṭha edition:] The Burmese (Ma.) and PTS (Yu.) editions read "sammā payogapaccayā"; so too below.
