Suttapiṭaka · Khuddakanikāya · Paṭisambhidāmagga · Vol. 31 · Section 705

[705] For right view (sammādiṭṭhi), what are the five detachments (virāga)? Detachment by suppression (vikkhambhanavirāga), detachment by substitution of opposite factors (tadaṅgavirāga), detachment by eradication (samucchedavirāga), detachment by tranquilization (paṭippassaddhivirāga), and detachment by escape (nissaraṇavirāga). There is detachment by suppression of the hindrances (nīvaraṇa) for one developing the first jhāna; detachment by substitution of opposite factors with regard to views for one developing concentration (samādhi) partaking of penetration (nibbedhabhāgiya); detachment by eradication for one developing the supramundane path leading to destruction; detachment by tranquilization at the moment of fruition; and detachment by escape, which is cessation, Nibbāna. These are the five detachments of right view. One becomes filled with zeal (chanda) for these five detachments, is resolved through faith, and one's mind (citta) is well established therein.
