[704] For right view (sammādiṭṭhi), what are the five seclusions (viveka)? Seclusion by suppression (vikkhambhanaviveka), seclusion by substitution of opposites (tadaṅgaviveka), seclusion by cutting off (samucchedaviveka), seclusion by tranquilization (paṭippassaddhiviveka), and seclusion by escape (nissaraṇaviveka). Seclusion by suppression of the hindrances (nīvaraṇa) is for one developing the first jhāna; seclusion by substitution of opposites, with regard to views, is for one developing concentration (samādhi) partaking of penetration; seclusion by cutting off is for one developing the supramundane path leading to destruction; seclusion by tranquilization is at the moment of fruition; and seclusion by escape is cessation, Nibbāna. These are the five seclusions for right view. With regard to these five seclusions one comes to have zeal aroused, is resolved through faith, and one's mind (citta) is well steadied.
