[725] "Calm" (sama): Because sensual desire has been abandoned, renunciation (nekkhamma) is calm; because ill will has been abandoned, non-ill will (abyāpāda) is calm; because dullness and drowsiness have been abandoned, the perception of light (ālokasaññā) is calm; because restlessness has been abandoned, non-distraction (avikkhepa) is calm; because doubt has been abandoned, the definition of dhammas (dhammavavatthāna) is calm; because ignorance has been abandoned, knowledge (ñāṇa) is calm; because discontent (arati) has been abandoned, gladness (pāmujja) is calm; because the hindrances (nīvaraṇa) have been abandoned, the first jhāna is calm … because all defilements have been abandoned, the path of Arahantship (arahattamagga) is calm.
"Head" (sīsa): There are thirteen heads: craving (taṇhā) is the head of impediment (palibodha); conceit (māna) is the head of bondage (bandhana); view (diṭṭhi) is the head of misapprehension (parāmāsa); restlessness is the head of distraction (vikkhepa); ignorance is the head of defilement (kilesa); faith (saddhā) is the head of resolution (adhimokkha); energy is the head of exertion (paggaha); mindfulness is the head of establishment (upaṭṭhāna); concentration (samādhi) is the head of non-distraction; wisdom (paññā) is the head of seeing (dassana); the life faculty (jīvitindriya) is the head of occurrence (pavatta); liberation (vimokkha) is the head of the domain (gocara); and cessation is the head of formations (saṅkhāra).
