[738] "Higher morality, higher mentality, higher wisdom" (adhisīlaṃ adhicittaṃ adhipaññā): [Restraining] sensual desire (kāmacchanda) by renunciation (nekkhamma) is purity of morality (sīlavisuddhi) in the sense of restraint, purity of mind (cittavisuddhi) in the sense of non-distraction, purity of view (diṭṭhivisuddhi) in the sense of seeing. What therein has the sense of restraint is the training in higher morality (adhisīlasikkhā); what therein has the sense of non-distraction is the training in higher mentality (adhicittasikkhā); what therein has the sense of seeing is the training in higher wisdom (adhipaññāsikkhā).
[Restraining] ill will (byāpāda) by non-ill will is purity of morality in the sense of restraint … [Restraining] all defilements (kilesa) by the path of arahantship (arahattamagga) is purity of morality in the sense of restraint, purity of mind in the sense of non-distraction, purity of view in the sense of seeing. What therein has the sense of restraint is the training in higher morality; what therein has the sense of non-distraction is the training in higher mentality; what therein has the sense of seeing is the training in higher wisdom.
