[739] "Tranquility (passaddhi)": by renunciation (nekkhamma) one calms sensual desire; by non-ill will (abyāpāda) one calms ill will … by the path of arahantship (arahattamagga) one calms all defilements (kilesa).
"Knowledge (ñāṇa)": because sensual desire has been abandoned, renunciation is knowledge in the sense of being known; because ill will has been abandoned, non-ill will is knowledge in the sense of being known … because all defilements have been abandoned, the path of arahantship is knowledge in the sense of being known.
"Seeing (dassana)": because sensual desire has been abandoned, renunciation, since it has been seen, is seeing; because ill will has been abandoned, non-ill will, since it has been seen, is seeing … because all defilements have been abandoned, the path of arahantship, since it has been seen, is seeing.
"Purity (visuddhi)": abandoning sensual desire, one is purified by renunciation; abandoning ill will, one is purified by non-ill will … abandoning all defilements, one is purified by the path of arahantship.
