[87] There is virtue (sīla) that is limited (pariyanta); there is virtue that is unlimited. Herein, what is virtue that is limited? There is virtue limited by gain; there is virtue limited by fame; there is virtue limited by relatives; there is virtue limited by limbs; there is virtue limited by life.
What is virtue limited by gain? Here someone, for the sake of gain, conditioned by gain, by reason of gain, transgresses a training rule (sikkhāpada) as he has undertaken it. This is virtue limited by gain.
What is virtue limited by fame? Here someone, for the sake of fame, conditioned by fame, by reason of fame, transgresses a training rule as he has undertaken it. This is virtue limited by fame.
What is virtue limited by relatives? Here someone, for the sake of relatives, conditioned by relatives, by reason of relatives, transgresses a training rule as he has undertaken it. This is virtue limited by relatives.
What is virtue limited by limbs? Here someone, for the sake of a limb, conditioned by a limb, by reason of a limb, transgresses a training rule as he has undertaken it. This is virtue limited by limbs.
What is virtue limited by life? Here someone, for the sake of life, conditioned by life, by reason of life, transgresses a training rule as he has undertaken it. This is virtue limited by life. Virtues such as these are torn, rent, blotched, and mottled; they are not freeing, not praised by the wise; they are adhered to; they are not conducive to concentration (samādhi); they are not a basis for non-remorse, not a basis for gladness, not a basis for rapture (pīti), not a basis for tranquility (passaddhi), not a basis for pleasure, not a basis for concentration, not a basis for knowledge (ñāṇa) and vision of things as they really are (yathābhūta); they do not conduce exclusively to disenchantment, to dispassion, to cessation (nirodha), to peace, to direct knowledge, to full enlightenment, to Nibbāna. This is virtue that is limited.
