[17] When the Lord of the World (lokanātha), Sumedha, the supreme person, had attained final Nibbāna,
with a mind full of confidence, glad at heart, I performed worship at the stūpa.
And those there whose taints (āsava) were destroyed, possessing the six superknowledges (chaḷabhiññā), of great psychic power —
having gathered them together there, I provided a meal-offering to the Saṅgha (saṅghabhatta).
At that time the Blessed One Sumedha had an attendant,
Sumedha by name; he then expressed the rejoicing (anumodanā).
Through that confidence of mind (citta), I was reborn in a celestial mansion (vimāna);
eighty-six thousand celestial nymphs (accharā) were mine.¹
They always comply with me with every sensual delight;²
I surpass the other devas — this is the fruit of my meritorious deed.
In the twenty-fifth aeon (kappa), I was a khattiya named Varuṇa;
I was then a wheel-turning monarch (cakkavatti) whose food was pure.
[There] they sow no seed, nor are ploughs drawn along;
human beings enjoy sāli-rice that ripens on untilled ground.
Having exercised kingship there, I went again to the state of a deva;³
then too such abundance of wealth arose for me.
No living beings, whether friends or foes, do me harm;
and I am dear to all — this is the fruit of my meritorious deed.
The gift that I gave then, thirty thousand aeons [ago] —
[since then] I know of no bad destination (duggati): this is the fruit of the perfumed anointing (gandhalepa).
In this auspicious aeon (bhaddakappa) I was one lord of people,
a royal sage (rājisi) of great might, a wheel-turning monarch of great strength.
Having established the great multitude in the five precepts,
and having led them to the good destination (sugati) itself, I was dear to the deities.
The four analytical insights (paṭisambhidā), and also these eight liberations (vimokkha),
and the six superknowledges have been realized; the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.
Thus indeed did the Venerable Elder Pilindavaccha speak these verses.
The Apadāna of the Elder Pilindavaccha is concluded.
