[171] In the city of Bandhumatī there was a great guild company;
I was their chief, and they were my followers.¹
Having assembled them all, I roused them to a work of merit:
"We shall build a pavilion (māḷa) for the Saṅgha, the unsurpassed field of merit."
¹ Ma., Yu. read: *mama baddhacarā ca te* — "and they were my devoted attendants."
"Very well!" they replied, and, complying with my wish,
having brought that pavilion to full completion,¹ we gave it to Vipassī.
In the ninety-first aeon (kappa) from now, since I then gave that pavilion,
I know of no bad destination — this is the fruit of the gift of a pavilion.
In the fifty-ninth aeon there was one lord of the people,
Āvela² by name, a wheel-turning monarch (cakkavatti) of great might.
The four analytical insights (paṭisambhidā), and also these eight liberations (vimokkha),
and the six superknowledges (abhiññā) have been realized; the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.
Thus indeed the Venerable Samādapaka Thera spoke these verses.
