[292] "Eighty-four thousand of us went forth, having nothing;
I was the leader (pubbaṅgama) of them, for the attainment of the supreme goal.
And these, still with lust (rāga) and delusion,¹ [yet] serene and unclouded [in mind],²
attended [upon them] respectfully, devoted, with their own hands.
With taints (āsava) destroyed, hatred expelled, their task accomplished, free of taints,
the Self-Awakened Ones (sayambhū), the unvanquished, suffused [them] with minds of loving-kindness (mettā).
Having attended upon those Fully Awakened Ones (sambuddha), mindful (paṭissata),
and having reached³ death (maraṇa), we went to the state of devas.
In the ninety-fourth aeon (kappa) from the present, such was the virtue (sīla) I guarded
that I know of no bad destination: this is the fruit of restraint (saññama).
The four analytical knowledges (paṭisambhidā) and also these eight liberations (vimokkha),
and the six superknowledges (abhiññā) have been realized; the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled."
Thus indeed the Venerable Pubbaṅgamaniya the Elder spoke these verses.
