With a mind (citta) full of confidence, joyful, I attended upon the supreme Buddha —
the Self-Arisen One (sayambhū), the foremost person — secluded in retreat for seven days.
Knowing the time of his emergence, I took a great bunch of bananas
and approached Padumuttara, the Great Sage.
The Blessed One accepted it¹ — the All-Knowing One², the Leader of the World;
gladdening my mind, the Great Sage partook of it.
Having partaken, the Fully Awakened One, the caravan-leader unsurpassed,
sat down upon his own seat and spoke these verses:
"Whatever yakkhas are gathered³ upon this mountain,
and all the hosts of beings in the forest⁴ — let them listen to my word.
He who attended upon the Buddha — who is like the maned king of beasts —
him I shall proclaim; listen to me as I speak.
Eleven times shall he be king of the devas,
and thirty-four times shall he be a wheel-turning monarch (cakkavatti).
A hundred thousand aeons hence, one arisen in the lineage of Okkāka,
Gotama by clan, shall be the Teacher in the world.
Having reviled ascetics who were virtuous and free from taints (āsava),
through the ripening of that evil deed he shall obtain a name.
An heir in his teachings, a true-born son formed by the Dhamma,
he shall be a disciple, Kuṇḍadhāna by name."
Devoted to seclusion, a meditator delighting in jhāna,
having gladdened the Teacher, I dwell free from taints.
Surrounded by disciples⁵, honoured by the Saṅgha of bhikkhus,
the Victor, sitting amid the Saṅgha of bhikkhus, had the tickets (salākā) taken.
Arranging my robe over one shoulder, I paid homage to the Leader of the World,
and before the Best of Speakers I took the first [ticket].
Because of that deed the Blessed One, the Shaker of the Ten-Thousandfold World-System,
sitting amid the Saṅgha of bhikkhus, established me in the foremost place.
My energy (vīriya) bears the burden, conveying me to security from bondage (yogakkhema);
I bear my final body in the dispensation of the Perfectly Self-Awakened One.
The four analytic insights (paṭisambhidā), and also these eight liberations (vimokkha),
and the six superknowledges (abhiññā) have been realized; the Buddha's teaching has been accomplished.
Thus indeed the Venerable Elder Kuṇḍadhāna spoke these verses.
The Apadāna of the Elder Kuṇḍadhāna is concluded.
