[34] At that time I was a brahmin (brāhmaṇa), Sobhita by name;
surrounded by my own pupils, I went to the monastery (ārāma).
At that time the Blessed One, the Supreme among Men (purisuttama),
surrounded by the Saṅgha of bhikkhus, came out from the monastery gate and stood there.
I saw that Fully Awakened One (sambuddha), the tamed one surrounded by the tamed;
having filled my own mind (citta) with serene confidence, I praised the Leader of the World (lokanāyaka):
"Whatever trees there are, they all grow upon the earth;
even so do beings endowed with intelligence grow in the dispensation (sāsana) of the Victor (jina).
You, the Caravan Leader (satthavāha), the All-Knowing One, the Great Seer (mahesi),
having lifted many people out of the wrong path, point out the path.
Tamed, surrounded by the tamed,[1] a meditator with those who delight in jhāna,
with those who are ardent (ātāpī) and resolute, calm, and steadfast —
adorned by the assembly,[2] you shine with merit and knowledge;[3]
your radiance streams forth like the rising of the sun."
Seeing [me] with a mind full of confidence, the Great Seer Padumuttara,
the Teacher, standing amid the Saṅgha of bhikkhus, spoke these verses:
"That brahmin who, having stirred up joy, has extolled me
shall delight in the world of the devas (devaloka) for a hundred thousand aeons (kappa).
Passing away from Tusita, impelled by his bright roots of merit (sukkamūla),
he will go forth in the dispensation of the Blessed One Gotama.
Having gone forth in the dispensation, he will gain gladness and joy;[4]
Sāgata by name, he will be a disciple of the Teacher."
Having gone forth, I shunned evil action by body;
abandoning misconduct by speech, I purified my livelihood.
Dwelling thus, skilled in the fire elements (tejodhātu),
having fully understood all the taints (āsava), I dwell free of taints.
The four analytic insights (paṭisambhidā), and these eight liberations (vimokkha),
and the six superknowledges (chaḷabhiññā) have been realized; done is the Buddha's teaching.
Thus indeed the Venerable Elder Sāgata spoke these verses.
The Apadāna of the Elder Sāgata is concluded.
