[400] When Kakusandha, the brahmin, the one who had lived out the holy life, had attained final Nibbāna,
I took a garland of salaḷa and had a pavilion (maṇḍapa) made.
Gone to Tāvatiṃsa, I obtain a supreme mansion (byamha);
I surpass¹ the other devas — this is the fruit of meritorious deed (puññakamma).
Whether by day or by night, while walking or standing,
I am canopied with salaḷa flowers — this is the fruit of meritorious deed.
In this very aeon (kappa), since I honored the Buddha,
I know of no bad destination (duggati) — this is the fruit of honoring the Buddha.
[¹ The Burmese and European editions read "(a)tirocāmi" ("I outshine").]
My defilements (kilesa) have been burned away; all existences (bhava) have been extirpated;
like an elephant that has sundered its bonds, I dwell without taints (āsava).
Welcome indeed was my coming into the presence of my Buddha!
The three true knowledges (vijjā) have been attained; the Buddha's teaching (sāsana) has been fulfilled.
The four analytic insights (paṭisambhidā) and these eight liberations (vimokkha) as well,
and the six superknowledges (abhiññā) have been realized; the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.
Thus indeed did the Venerable Elder Salaḷamaṇḍapiya speak these verses.
The Apadāna of the Elder Salaḷamaṇḍapiya is concluded.
The ninth: the Apadāna of the Elder Sabbadāyaka (399)
