[23] The Victor (jina) named Padumuttara, the receiver of oblations, then entered the city together with a hundred thousand possessed of mastery (vasī). As he was entering the city — the Peaceful One, the Steadfast One (tādī) — at that very moment a resounding sound arose along the street, amid the welcoming and the rest.¹ Through the Buddha's power, unplayed and unstruck,² lutes sounded forth of themselves as the Buddha entered the city. I paid homage to the supreme Buddha, Padumuttara, the Great Sage; and having seen the marvel (pāṭihira), I made my mind (citta) confident there. Oh, the Buddha! Oh, the Dhamma! Oh, the excellence of our Teacher! Even the musical instruments, though insentient, sound forth of themselves! The perception (saññā) that I gained then, a hundred thousand aeons from now, [by reason of it] I know of no bad destination: this is the fruit of the perception of the Buddha. My defilements (kilesa) have been burned away; all existences (bhava) have been extirpated. Like an elephant that has sundered its bonds, I dwell free of taints (āsava). Welcome indeed was my coming into the presence of my Buddha! The three true knowledges (vijjā) have been attained; the Buddha's teaching has been done. The four analytic insights (paṭisambhidā), and these eight liberations (vimokkha) as well, and the six superknowledges (chaḷabhiññā) have been realized; the Buddha's teaching has been done. ¹ Variant readings: Burmese ed.: *ratanāni pajjotiṃsu* ("the jewels shone forth"); European (PTS) ed.: *ratanāni panādiṃsu* ("the jewels resounded"). ² Burmese ed.: *bherivajjumaghaṭṭitā*; European (PTS) ed.: *bherivajjanaghaṭṭitā* (readings involving drums, *bheri*). Thus indeed did the Venerable Pāṭihirasaññaka Thera speak these verses. The Apadāna of Pāṭihirasaññaka Thera is concluded. Fourth: the Apadāna of Ñāṇatthavika Thera (434)
