While the body of Vessabhū,
the Great Seer (mahesi), was being burned,
I took scented water
and extinguished the pyre.
In the thirty-first aeon (kappa) from now
I extinguished the pyre;
I know of no bad destination (duggati) —
this is the fruit of the scented water.
My defilements (kilesa) have been burned away;
all existences (bhava) have been eradicated;
like an elephant that has burst its bonds,
I dwell without taints (anāsava).
Welcome indeed was my coming
into the presence of my Buddha;
the three true knowledges (vijjā) have been attained;
the Buddha's teaching (sāsana) has been done.
#1 M. (Burmese) and Yu. (European) editions read: citapūjāyidaṃ phalaṃ — "this is the fruit of the honoring of the pyre" — for gandhodakassidaṃ phalaṃ ("this is the fruit of the scented water").
The four analytic insights (paṭisambhidā)
and also these eight liberations (vimokkha),
the six superknowledges (abhiññā) have been realized;
the Buddha's teaching has been done.
Thus indeed did the Venerable Citakanibbāpaka the Elder speak these verses.
