[92]
In the city of Haṃsavatī I was a potter.
I saw the stainless Buddha, who had crossed the flood (ogha), free of taints (āsava).
A well-made clay bowl I gave to the supreme Buddha.
Having given the bowl to the Blessed One, the upright one, the steadfast one (tādī),
whenever I am reborn in existence I obtain golden dishes,
and salvers [1] made of silver, of gold, and of gems.
I eat from platters [2]: this is the fruit of meritorious deed;
and in fame [3] I am foremost [4] among people.
Just as, when even a little seed is sown in an excellent field,
and the rain duly pours down [5] its torrent, the fruit gladdens the farmer,
even so this gift of a bowl, sown in the Buddha-field (buddhakhetta):
as the showers of rapture (pīti) rain down, its fruit will gladden me [6].
However many fields exist — communities and groups —
there is none equal to the Buddha-field, a giver of happiness [7] to all living beings.
Homage to you, O thoroughbred of men! Homage to you, O supreme among men!
Having given a single bowl, I have attained the unshakable state (acalaṃ padaṃ).
In the ninety-first aeon (kappa) from now, since I gave the bowl then,
I know of no bad destination (duggati): this is the fruit of the gift of a bowl.
My defilements (kilesa) have been burned away; all existences have been extirpated;
like an elephant that has burst its bonds, I dwell free of taints.
Welcome indeed was my coming into the presence of my Buddha:
the three true knowledges (vijjā) have been attained; the Buddha's teaching (sāsana) has been fulfilled.
The four analytic insights (paṭisambhidā), and these eight liberations (vimokkha) too,
and the six superknowledges (chaḷabhiññā) have been realized; the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled.
Thus indeed did the Venerable Ekapattadāyaka the Elder speak these verses.
The Apadāna of Ekapattadāyaka the Elder is concluded.
Third: the Apadāna of Kāsumārikaphaladāyaka the Elder (503)
