[421] Which phenomena (dhammā) are indeterminate (abyākata)?
On the occasion when one develops the path for rebirth in the formless realm (arūpūpapatti) and — having completely transcended the sphere of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana) — with the abandonment of pleasure and … enters upon and dwells in the fourth jhāna accompanied by the perception of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana): on that occasion there is contact (phassa) … there is non-distraction (avikkhepa) … These phenomena are wholesome.
As the resultant (vipāka) of that same wholesome kamma belonging to the formless realm (arūpāvacara), because it has been done, because it has been accumulated, one — having completely transcended the sphere of nothingness — with the abandonment of pleasure and … enters upon and dwells in the fourth jhāna accompanied by the perception of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception: on that occasion there is contact … there is non-distraction … These phenomena are indeterminate.
