[427] Which phenomena (dhammā) are indeterminate (abyākata)?
On the occasion when one develops the supramundane (lokuttara) jhāna—leading out (niyyānika), conducing to the dismantling [of the round] (apacayagāmi)—for the abandonment of wrong views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first stage (bhūmi), and, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, … enters upon and dwells in the first jhāna, [which is] emptiness (suññata): on that occasion there is contact (phassa) … there is non-distraction (avikkhepa) … These phenomena are wholesome (kusala).
Because that same supramundane wholesome jhāna has been done, has been developed, as [its] result (vipāka), quite secluded from sensual pleasures, … one enters upon and dwells in the first jhāna, [which is] emptiness: on that occasion there is contact … there is non-distraction … These phenomena are indeterminate.
