[440] Which phenomena (dhammā) are indeterminate (abyākata)?
On the occasion when one develops the supramundane (lokuttara) jhāna — leading out [of the round] (niyyānika), leading to dispersal (apacayagāmī) — for the abandoning of wrong views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first stage (bhūmi): quite secluded from sensual pleasures … one enters and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipada-dandhābhiñña), undirected (appaṇihita) — on that occasion there is contact (phassa) … there is non-distraction (avikkhepa) … these phenomena are wholesome.
As the result (vipāka) of that same supramundane wholesome jhāna, because it has been done, because it has been developed: quite secluded from sensual pleasures … one enters and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge, undirected — on that occasion there is contact … there is non-distraction … These phenomena are indeterminate.
