[465] Which phenomena (dhammā) are indeterminate (abyākata)?
On the occasion when one develops supramundane (lokuttara) jhāna — leading out (niyyānika), conducive to dismantling (apacayagāmī) — for the abandoning of views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first plane (bhūmi), and, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, … enters and dwells in the first jhāna — painful in progress and sluggish in direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadaṃ dandhābhiññaṃ), undirected (appaṇihita), with zeal as dominant (chandādhipateyya) — on that occasion there is contact (phassa) … there is non-distraction (avikkhepa) … These phenomena are wholesome.
As the result (vipāka) of that same supramundane wholesome jhāna, because it has been done, because it has been developed, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, … one enters and dwells in the first jhāna — painful in progress and sluggish in direct knowledge, signless (animitta), with zeal as dominant — on that occasion there is contact … there is non-distraction … These phenomena are indeterminate.
