[447] Which phenomena (dhammā) are indeterminate (abyākata)?
On the occasion when one develops the supramundane (lokuttara) jhāna — leading out (niyyānika), leading to diminution (apacayagāmi) — for the abandoning of views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first plane (bhūmi): quite secluded from sensual pleasures … one enters and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful progress and sluggish direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadā dandhābhiññā), with zeal (chanda) as the dominant influence — on that occasion there is contact (phassa) … there is non-distraction (avikkhepa) … These phenomena are wholesome.
As the result (vipāka) of that same supramundane wholesome jhāna having been done, having been developed: quite secluded from sensual pleasures … one enters and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful progress and sluggish direct knowledge, signless (animitta), with zeal as the dominant influence — on that occasion there is contact … there is non-distraction … These phenomena are indeterminate.
