[462] Which phenomena (dhammā) are indeterminate (abyākata)?
On whatever occasion one develops the supramundane (lokuttara) jhāna that leads out (niyyānika) and tends to dispersion (apacayagāmi), for the abandonment of wrong views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first stage (bhūmi), and, quite secluded from sensual pleasures … one enters and dwells in the first jhāna, desireless (appaṇihita), with zeal as dominant (chandādhipateyya) — on that occasion there is contact (phassa) … there is non-distraction (avikkhepa) … These phenomena are wholesome.
As the resultant (vipāka) of that same supramundane wholesome jhāna having been done, having been developed, quite secluded from sensual pleasures … one enters and dwells in the first jhāna, empty (suññata), with zeal as dominant — on that occasion there is contact … there is non-distraction … These phenomena are indeterminate.
