[655] The form base (rūpāyatana) is what is seen (diṭṭha); the sound base (saddāyatana) is what is heard (suta); the smell base (gandhāyatana), the taste base (rasāyatana), and the tangible base (phoṭṭhabbāyatana) are what is sensed (muta); all form is form cognized by the mind (manasā viññāta). Thus is the compendium of form in the fourfold manner. The Tetrad (Catukka).
